CasinoThe European Poker Tour’s event in Dortmund, Germany has begun, with Day 1a having been completed and Day 1b still going strong. Day 1a began with 198 players from around the world fighting for more chips and a chance to go all the way and become an EPT champion. Of those 198 who started day 1a, only 70 remained to fight on once the last hand was completed.

The event is taking place at the beautiful Casino Hohensyburg in Dortmund, where the outer walls are almost entirely windows, giving casino patrons a grand view of the lovely Ruhr River which the casino overlooks. The casino also comes with a moat, and shares its name with a nearby castle that was destroyed in the 13th century.

Tennis Champion Boris Becker, who is now a member of Team Poker Stars, was unable to travel to the tournament due to a sudden illness, a disappointment for the many fans who had hoped to see him playing poker. However, the tournament was still loaded with stars, both European and American, battling for the title of champion.

At the end of the day, Chabot Cyrille of France held the chip lead with 111,100 chips. In second place was Claudio Rinaldi of Switzerland, holding 71,300 chips. The short stack was American Dustin Mele, who was the winner of the Poker Stars Passport which is sending him to 10 prestigious poker tournaments around the world. Mele held a mere 4,300 in chips.

Day 1b is currently in full swing, with Daniel Negreanu among the more famous names participating.
