The European Commission has moved to block a French decree which is imposing restrictions upon the online gambling market. The detailed opinion that was issued by the European Commission will block France from enforcing their anti-gambling decree until March 31st, 2008. The decree comes from a provision in France’s 2007 Delinquency Act that imitates the U.S Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act by prohibiting banks and other financial institutions from processing payments to online gambling sites. Another decree is included in the 2007 Delinquency Act that seeks to protect the French online gambling monopolies. After the block ends on March 31st France may enforce their decree if they wish, but the European Commission will likely take further legal action against France if they do so.
