wsopchip.jpgHarrah’s Entertainment announced this morning in a conference call that the rumors are true. The final table of the WSOP Main Event is indeed being pushed back into November in a move designed to increase the exposure of the players, letting the public get to know them, increase the drama and anticipation surrounding the final table, thereby providing the WSOP and ESPN with immense appeal which will draw all sorts of spectators into a highly anticipated clash between the nine players who will play for an astounding cash pool.

WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack had this to say about the change, “Our goal is to create a greater sense of anticipation for the outcome of the final table. We’re changing the equation, if you will. We want as many people around the world as possible to be asking ‘Who will win?’ and the best way to do that is to make the decision we’ve made. If there’s more buzz and water cooler talk, just as there would be around the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Daytona 500, than we’ve done a great thing for the game of poker.”

117 days. That is the length of time that will elapse once the final table is set until the time when the final table commences play. There will be months of anticipation, 16-weeks of mind-boggling anxiety, analysis, and predictions.

The Main Event is scheduled to begin play on July 3rd, with play continuing throughout early July until the final table is set. At that time, the nine remaining players will each receive 9th place prize money. Final table play will begin on November 9th, wit action continuing until only two players remain. Heads-up play will take place on November 10th until the event reaches its conclusion, which is expected to occur very early on November 11th. ESPN will begin broadcasting the final table a few hours after the winner is determined.

During the 117 day break, the money in the prize pool that has yet to be awarded will be placed into an interest-bearing account, sweetening the pot for the players who have to wait through the arduously long months, with all the interest added to the prize pool, none going to any of the companies connected with the event.

The poker community is abuzz with the news, posing a plethora of questions about how this move will go off. Concerns about the possibility of conclusion or threats being made to the players have been raised, as well as questions about how Harrah’s will respond to a variety of situations, including what will happen if it is simply impossible for a player to get back to Las Vegas for the final table, with the most popular example being a foreign player having a return visa denied. Harrah’s stated that they are aware that it is impossible to be fully prepared for every possible scenario, but that they would like to be trusted to conduct the event in a safe, professional, and entertaining manner.

One thing is for sure: This is going to be interesting.
