eu.jpgThe Dutch and Greek governments have receive formal requests from the European Commission to remove their restrictions in the online gaming markets and bring their laws into compliance with the EU Treaty, which bans countries from restricting competition in the market sector. The formal requests are the final warnings that The Netherlands and Greece will receive, and if they do not comply within two months the two countries will find themselves facing the judges at the European Court of Justice.

The Netherlans has gotten into trouble with the European Commission due to the restriction it places on sports betting for onlien gaming companies. The Netherlands legislature was also scheduled to vote on whether or not to award an exclusive three-year license to Holland Casinos, a state-run company, to operate online gaming within the country. These actions are clear violations of the EU Treaty and the European Commission is taking notice.

Greece has been defending its gaming group OPAP, a domestic monopoly which forbids foreign online gaming companies from offering their services to Greek citizens, while OPAP is vigorously promoting and advertising its own online gaming selection. OPAP has also been reaching out to the citizens of foreign countries in an effort to accrue even more profits. All indications are that Greece is prepared to defend its monopoly and fight the European Commission.

The European Commission has been vigorously pursuing violators of the EU Treaty and threatening legal action upon any country that does not mend its ways. In recent months they have gone after France, Germany, Finland, Sweden, The Netherlands, and Greece. This is only the beginning of the legal spectacle that is about to ensue.
